When you see a car driving rashly on the road and almost injuring somebody and fleeing the scene, what do you do? You try to either follow them or note down their registration number in a hurry. It might happen with you as well. Your car might get damaged, and if you have an insurance policy for the car, you’ll get coverage for the damage. But if you wish to look up for the vehicle owner who did this to you, you will have to pay a visit to the Regional Transport Office. Then you will have to go through a huge documentation process to find the details of the vehicle.

One of the most important requirements is to identify the vehicle during a hit and run case. Finding out the vehicle registration number is imperative to lodge a case against the driver/owner. Even if you manage to get the number plate details, you might not be able to find out the owner’s information. Even if it isn’t necessarily about a hit-and-run scenario and you wish to know the details about a second-hand vehicle that you are thinking about buying, there are a few ways by which you can find the same.

5-Step Process to Find Car Registration Details Online through VAHAN

The process of finding the car registration details is pretty simple and easy to follow in India. The government has made it easier for its citizens to trace a car or a bike owner’s details by the registration number online. Through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Centre has launched VAHAN, a national registry. It is a central database for every crucial detail and information related to vehicle owners. Currently, this online database has digitized more than 28 crore vehicle information.

The main objective of the government to launch VAHAN is to centralize every single piece of data related to driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates from the District Transport Offices (DTOs) and Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) located across the nation.

Here is a step-by-step process of checking the vehicle registration information online through VAHAN –

  • Visit the official website of VAHAN and check for the vehicle owner’s name.
  • Click on ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’ at the top of the page.
  • Enter the vehicle registration number on the page that opens (Bike or Car number plate details)
  • Enter the human verification code and click on ‘Search Vehicle’.
  • The details will be presented in front of you. Note the name and other details of the bike or car owner.

How to Check Vehicle Registration Details Through SMS?

To make it easier for every citizen to find out the details of a vehicle without going to the official website of VAHAN, the government has also provided the option of checking the same through SMS. To do that, you need to follow the below-mentioned steps:

  1. Enter the VAHAN vehicle registration number on your message body
  2. Send the SMS to 7738299899.

Once the message is delivered, you will receive the details of the car or the bike, along with the name of its owner, make and model of the vehicle, RTO details, RC/FC expiry, insurance details, and so on.

Why Would You Need to Find the Registration Details of a Vehicle?

India is a country with a huge population. And here, several cars and bikes are bought every single day. So as much as buying comprehensive car insurance is imperative for new buyers of a car, it is also important to be aware of how you can safeguard your prized possession in case of any damage.

An insurance policy for a car or bike can indeed cover the damages caused during a mishap. But if you can find out more about the person for whom your car or bike suffered those damages, wouldn’t it be amazing? So, here are some of the basic reasons due to which you might need to find more about the details of a vehicle with its number plate information –

  • Accidents: If your vehicle receives damages because of an unfortunate accident and there is a dispute between the third party and you, you can trace the details of the vehicle’s owner on VAHAN by simply putting the number plate details.
  • Hit and Run: If you witness a hit-and-run scenario and note down the number plate details of the vehicle, you can find more about the owner of the vehicle with VAHAN.
  • Buying a Second-hand Vehicle: Whether you are looking forward to buying a second-hand vehicle directly from the owner or a dealer, it is always better to check the vehicle's details and its past owner through VAHAN. This way, you will be assured about the authenticity of the owner and the vehicle that you are going to buy.
  • No Objection Certification: RTOs all over the country can access the data of every vehicle with VAHAN. Hence, you will not have to provide a NOC if you are moving to another city.

Why Buying a Car Policy Online is Essential?

If you drive a car every day, you can be a witness to different street setbacks that can harm you, your car, or any third party involved in the accident. So, with an insurance policy for a car, you can keep your car, and yourself protected from all kinds of liabilities that may emerge from such mishaps. Car insurance will provide you with financial coverage against the damages on your car and the damages caused to the third party. However, only buying the policy won’t suffice as you will need to renew the car insurance policy on time. So, if you are going to buy a car anytime soon, go through the details of the car insurance price list from various insurers and then choose the one you think will meet your requirements the best.

Conclusion

Now, as you are aware of finding out about the details of a vehicle and its owner who is involved in a road mishap, you can feel relieved, isn’t it? But as mentioned above, you should also safeguard your vehicle with a good insurance policy to save yourself from breaking the bank!
